A 21-year-old man was killed last night after a car hit a fence and a tree in Gildersome.
The accident, involving a Ford Fiesta, happened at about 9pm on the A62 Gelderd Road.
The driver, from Gomersal, near Cleckheaton, was pronounced dead at the scene. He has not yet been named.
His 26-year-old passenger was taken to Leeds General Infirmary where he was treated for minor injuries.
Firefighters from Morley and Hunslet stations were called to the scene.
A spokesman at Morley fire station said: "We made the vehicle safe and had to cut him out of the car but there was nothing we could do for him."
The passenger suffered cuts and bruises and was treated by paramedics for shock before being taken to hospital.
The road was closed for five hours following the incident while police examined the scene for clues how the accident happened.
