Shipley Lions Club's custom vehicle show at Jenny Lane Recreation Ground attracted an even bigger crowd than last year's event. In a popular local success, Bob Cordingley, of Saltaire Garage, carried off the best in show, best van and best van engine awards with his "Transformation" Transit van, and the crowd of well over 5,000 underlined its approval by adding a fourth award, the Visitors' Choice Trophy.

As temperatures soared into the nineties in many parts of the country yesterday, Bradford equalled the 1911 record of 88 degrees and Leeds was the hottest place in the country with 93 degrees - and the city's hottest since 1873. People flocked to the baths and open-air swimming pools, and at the Lido in Bradford's Lister Park the attendance was 2,871.
