Plans to build a convenience store and tyre retailer in Heckmondwike look set to be refused by planners.

Homeguard Properties submitted plans for the development in Leeds Old Road to Kirklees Council for approval, but five letters of objection and four petitions with 394 signatures opposing the idea have been handed to planners.

A report to be discussed at the Kirklees Council heavy woollen planning sub-committee meeting in Dewsbury tomorrow recommends refusal on road safety grounds.

The site is next to the Six Lane Ends junction and is currently occupied by The Tyre Market, a fenced yard, a lock-up garage and an area of overgrown land.

Homeguard Properties wants to demolish the existing buildings and put up two new ones on either side of the Royal Balti takeaway. The larger building would house the late-opening convenience store and eight parking spaces and the other would contain the tyre retailer and seven parking spaces - including three in front of the Royal Balti.
