People with reminiscences about Gomersal Colliery are being asked to help contribute to a book about the lives of miners and their families.
The book is part of a project to celebrate life at the colliery, which once stood at Nutter Lane in Birstall - now the site of Oakwell Hall's car park - and closed in 1973.
A sculpture is also to be commissioned to identify the location of the colliery. Resident Yorkshire artists will be asked to produce ideas for the sculpture and when one is agreed, it will be commissioned.
The project is being managed by Spen Valley Civic Society which has obtained a Local Heritage Initiative grant from the Countryside Agency.
Civic Society Chairman Max Rathmell said: "This isn't going to be another mining memorial. It won't be half a winding shaft wheel stuck in a block of concrete.
"We want something uplifting and appreciative of the men who worked here and the families they supported."
The civic society is appealing for people connected with the colliery to come forward with recollections of life at the pit. Call Jennifer Alderson on (01274) 870072.
