A 12-year-old Bingley school pupil and her mum will zip 500 feet across a dam for cancer research this weekend.

Charlotte George and her mum Sylvia, pictured, will start at the top of the "Dambuster" zipslide - a form of abseil - nearly 200 feet above Baitings Dam near Halifax.

They will join about 200 daredevils who are taking on the challenge to raise £30,000 for Cancer Research UK.

Mrs George has already collected £500 for the charity by completing its Race For Life and more than £1,000 for the Telegraph & Argus Bradford Can...Cancer Research Appeal.

The 48-year-old mum-of-three said she has done similar stunts before and this time Charlotte wanted to take part.

But she said the Beckfoot School pupil, who is one of the youngest participants, is keeping a cool head.

"She is fine about it at the moment," Mrs George said. "It is very brave of her.

"I had already done this sort of thing over water.

"If you are going to do it, this is such a good cause."

Mrs George, of Red Beck Vale, Shipley, said the charity was important to her as she lost her mum and recently her mother-in-law to the disease.

"But you also come across a lot of people who have come out the other side," she said.

"Because of charities like Cancer Research UK they are still here. That's exactly why we are doing this. The research does help to save lives."

Zipslide organiser Peter Crampton said it was the most exciting and daring event they had planned.

"The response from people has been brilliant. Even those who've taken part in our other fundraising activities have been amazed by the zipslide," he said.

Charlotte and her mum are still looking for sponsorship. Any individuals or companies who can help should contact (01274) 586575.
