Fire crews, chemicals experts and environmental health officers attended a blaze at a pallet firm in Bradford early this morning.
The fire was centred on a massive pile of timber at a pallet yard in Lower Lane off Neville Road, West Bowling, and started just after 6.30am.
Fire officers attending the scene identified a green liquid seeping from the burning mound and alerted chemical experts after hearing a couple of small explosions.
The grounds were full of empty fridges, gas cylinders and empty containers of sulphuric acid.
Two trailers stored close by had to be cooled down with specialist cooling units.
Station officer Harvey Stewart, of Bradford fire station, said: "We were dealing with a large quantity of unknown waste materials so we alerted Hazmat as a precautionary measure. A hazardous substance officer attended and said there was no great danger. Fortunately the wind was blowing the toxic smoke away from the road."
Yorkshire Water and environmental health were also alerted. Efforts are under way to trace the owner of the firm.
