A disabled driver had an agonising walk to find a taxi after his car was towed away from a train station.

Konrad Durok, 57, had parked at Shipley station to catch the train to Leeds for a dental appointment.

He left his car in what he believed was a valid parking zone. But when he returned just three hours later the Volkswagen Polo had gone.

"I thought someone had pinched it. I went inside the train station and asked what had happened to my car," said Mr Durok.

"There were two ticket sellers there. They said my car had been towed away because it was parked illegally."

Mr Durok had to walk to Shipley town centre to get a taxi home.

He suffers from a back condition which makes it hard for him to walk and is also recovering from a gall bladder operation.

As well as his physical problems, Mr Durok, who lives in Shipley, said the £146 release fee caused him financial difficulties.

"I'm only on incapacity benefit of £64.35 a week," he said.

"I had some money saved because the car was going for its MOT and the insurance was due. The amount to get it back was really shocking."

Mr Durok is now calling for his money to be returned and for parking restrictions to be made more obvious at the station.

"I want that money back because I didn't park illegally and for all the inconvenience and stress this has caused," he said.

"They should put yellow lines and hatched boxes to make it clear where you can't park."

He has contacted his councillor, Phil Thornton (Lab, Shipley East), who has written on his behalf to the West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Authority.

"If the restrictions had been there obviously he wouldn't have parked there," said Coun Thornton.

Ray Price, managing director for Arriva Trains Northern, said he was sorry Mr Durok felt he had been treated unfairly but stressed the car was causing an obstruction.

"I appreciate that Mr Durok is upset at the removal of his car," he said.

"But I would respectfully remind both him and other station car park users that our parking rules are in place for safety and operational reasons and they are enforced for the benefit of all users of the station."
