A drug addict whose "burglar's kit" included a knife strapped to his leg has been jailed for four years.
Bradford Crown Court heard how Thomas Herson was disturbed by a neighbour after breaking into a couple's home in the early hours.
He was caught red-handed and when police searched him they found a large knife and some jewellery taken from the house.
Herson, 22, of Marten Road, Canterbury, Bradford, pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary.
Judge Roger Scott told him: "This was the worst form of house burglary. The occupants were in bed when you sought to invade their premises in the middle of the night."
The offence was aggravated by the fact it was committed less than 30 days after he was made the subject of a community punishment order, said the judge.
Herson had with him a "burglar's kit" which included "a very nasty diver's knife."
"The victim is now a very frightened lady, due to you coming to her home in the middle of the night," Judge Scott added.
Christine Colley, mitigating, said that at the time Herson was spending almost £180 a week on heroin and owed his suppliers around £4,000.
He had never intended to use the knife for anything other than breaking into the property.
