Police and social services in Keighley have begun another investigation into allegations that young girls are being abused by older men.

Parents first raised concerns with police 18 months ago and a thorough police and social services investigation was undertaken.

A joint statement from the West Yorkshire force and Bradford Council said: "A number of girls were interviewed but the police could find no evidence of systematic exploitation. Although some of the young women admitted having relationships with older men they described them as their boyfriends and did not feel they were being exploited."

There was, though, one allegation of serious sexual assault which was pursued by officers and will come before the Court soon.

But parents are again expressing worries and another investigation has begun. A joint team of police, social services, Education Bradford, Barnado's and the youth service is offering support, advice and education to young women in the area.

And a support group has been set up for parents worried about their daughters' wellbeing.

The statement said: "We must stress that the police need evidence of abuse or other criminal activity before they can take action." Anyone with information is asked to contact the police on (01535) 617059, or Bradford child protection unit on (01274) 434343.

A 25-year-old man from the Lawkholme area of Keighley was charged on July 17 last year with two counts of rape on a 13-year-old girl. He was granted conditional bail by Bradford Crown Court on July 1 this year to appear at Crown Court at a later date.
