A month ago Terry Hall was unemployed and dreaming of a career in film-making. Now he has made his first pop video - featuring Bradford singer Kimberley Walsh's band Girls Aloud - and this week it will be seen on Top of the Pops!

The band's new single, Life Got Cold, released last week, went straight to number three in the offical UK charts on Sunday.

Terry, 21, of Clayton, beat thousands of entrants to win the BBC's Top of the Pops Video Director Scheme, organised as part of the BBC Talent scheme.

He was one of five finalists who were given training, the loan of a camera and £500 to spend on production to create a five minute film.

Terry, a former Queensbury Secondary School pupil, entered the competition while a student at Falmouth College, where he studied Graphic Design, specialising in Motion Graphics in his final year.

Just a week after graduating he got a phone call from the BBC telling him he had won, and last month he was announced as the overall winner on Top of the Pops.

Terry's entry was a short music video he made as part of his final year college project. It features local young people and was partly filmed in the Bradford Interchange.

The prize was the opportunity to direct a music video for a chart artist or band on a budget of £10,000.

"I couldn't have asked for a better break," said Terry.

"I had a week to come up with an idea for a music video and the people at Top of the Pops helped to find locations and casting."

He is currently in London filming a music video with Girls Aloud, the hit group featuring Bradford's Kimberley Walsh which was created from ITV talent show Pop Stars: The Rivals last year.

"The video has the feel of fashion photography," said Terry.

"I was specifically influenced by the work of Steve Meisel and his book Four Days in LA.

"It's really weird and a bit bizarre, watching the monitor thinking: 'A month ago I was just a graduate and unemployed.'

"I'm still unemployed - but now I have a music video!"

Jeff Simpson, producer of Top of The Pops, said: "The BBC Talent scheme is all about finding new talent, and I have no doubt we've found new talent in Terry.

"He was very controlled during the shoot and we were very impressed by his ambition.

"I am quite sure that he will go on to make successful music promos."

When asked about his plans for the future, Terry said: "I am going to make a show reel and direct more music videos and maybe go on to make films."

Kimberley Walsh said today the girls were thrilled that the single had gone in at number three and they all thought Terry's video was great.

"It's superb that someone from Bradford has been given this chance," Kimberley said.

"We all think he did a fabulous job with the video, as you'll be able to see when it's on Top of The Pops."

The finished video will be shown on Top of the Pops on Friday.
