The women who took part in Bradford's Race for Life have raised more than £11,000 - and organisers of the event say that's only a quarter of the final total.

Last month more than 1,200 women of all ages took part in the 5km race around Lister Park to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Jeanette Bryant, 41, helped to organise the run and was joined by 35 of her colleagues from Equifax plc in Bradford where she works as a IT manager.

"I was diagnosed with breast cancer at 36 and know firsthand about the effects. I wanted to help other people who are diagnosed," she said.

"I have spoken to many people who have suffered with breast cancer and the treatment has greatly advanced over the last few years.

"It is so important to keep raising funds for cancer research so that treatment for the illness can continue to develop and save more lives."

Jeanette and her colleagues have raised more than £1,800 and are expecting more sponsor money to come in.

"It is great that so many people have taken part and raised so much money but we need to have it all handed in now so the research can begin and more lives can be saved," said Jeanette. "I would urge all those who have taken part to get collecting and send in their final amounts."

Cancer Research UK has only received 25 per cent of the total amount raised and organisers are appealing for people who took part to send in their sponsor money quickly.

Cancer Research UK's Race For Life was a series of 5km events across the UK where women walked or ran together to raise vital funds for research into cancer, its treatment and prevention. More than 300,000 women took part.

From the 130 events organised across the UK the charity hopes to raise £17.5 million.
