A new country walks group called Wherethe'ellarewe? has been awarded £3,512 from the National Lottery.

The Keighley-based organisation promotes physical activity and health through country walking and the money will keep it going for the next year.

Treasurer Linda Wheater said walkers meet every Friday and usually hike between three and eight miles.

"This is a walking group which is open for anybody whether you are fit and healthy, have heart problems or are disabled," she said.

"We usually take the group on public transport, which gets some people accustomed to using it. Some people are a little frightened of getting on and off buses or trains."

The money will be used to buy walking equipment, pay for transport and food costs.

Wherethe'ellarewe was among more than 20 groups granted cash by Awards for All, a lottery grants programme which helps pay for equipment and fund ventures.

Successful organisations include sports clubs, community groups, museums and churches.

Abdul Motin, development officer of the Bangladeshi Community Association in Keighley, said he was grateful to Awards for All after the group was given £5,000 to continue to fund its football team, which plays in the Keighley Sunday Alliance League.

"We've got Bangladeshi, white and Pakistani players and we're really trying to break down barriers in the town," he said.

Coaching, equipment, pitch hire and transport will be paid for throughout the season with the windfall.

Awards for All gives out grants of up to £5,000 to not-for-profit groups that must meet certain criteria, including helping to improve quality of life and increasing skill and creativity.

Groups that apply must be connected with sport, the arts, heritage, charitable activity, health, the environment or education.

Senior awards officer Kathy Allday said: "I am delighted we are able to provide funds for such imaginative projects which bring so many benefits to local communities."

The lottery grants programme is supported by The Arts Council of England, Community Fund, the Heritage Lottery Fund, The New Opportunities Fund and Sport England.
