Liversedge 3, Gateshead 1: Liversedge humbled higher league opposition with a display of guts, determination and more than a little flair as they dumped Gateshead out of the FA Cup in the preliminary round at Clayborn.

The Tynesiders were starting in the early round for the first time after last season's relegation from the UniBond Premier. Over recent years they have been used to being exempt until the second qualifying round.

Sedge showed scant regard for history as they swept the former Football League club away, banked £1,000 prize-money and booked themselves a trip to Oldham Town a week on Saturday.

"That was a terrific performance. If we had been 4-0 up at half time they couldn't have had any complaints," said Sedge manager Eugene Lacy. "We outplayed them and deserve to be going through to the next round.

"What I can't understand is why that was our first win of the season. We have played that well in two of our four league games and got only one point."

The visitors' keeper, Terry Burke, had made one outstanding save to deny James Nestor before the two-goal salvo that launched Sedge to their victory.

In the 33rd minute, Nestor curled in a shot after racing onto a long through ball. A little over three minutes later Nestor broke into the area and cut the ball back for Mark Brady to slot home. Gateshead briefly postured and 11 minutes into the second half cut the deficit. David Colvin got behind the Sedge defence to turn the ball past home keeper Kyle Sutcliffe.

Any hopes they had of an unlikely comeback were soon quashed and they were finished off in the 71st minute. Adam Goldthorpe burst into the area and drilled the ball into the goalmouth where substitute Scott Broughton arrived unmarked and he applied the final touch.
