A ten-year-old boy was rushed to hospital after a metal lamp post fell on him while he was playing.

Jordan Rawson was today recovering at home on Longfield Drive, Dudley Hill, from concussion, cuts and bruises to his head.

Bradford Council says the lamp posts are built to last for 30 years and blames vandalism for the freak accident, which happened on Thursday.

But Jordan's mother Jackie Nolan, 38, pictured with Jordan, claims the post was in a dangerous condition and she is calling for other lamp posts to be checked before someone is badly injured or killed.

Ms Nolan, a photography student at Bradford College, said: "It could easily have killed him.

"It was lucky it didn't land on one of the three or four-year-olds standing nearby.

"Neighbours say that it hit Jordan on the back and head, then bounced off the pavement and hit him on the forehead.

"The Council says it is vandalism, but what child can pull a lamp post down?

"They are supposed to be safe and withstand a few children swinging on them."

Doctors glued together a 5cm gash on Jordan's forehead. He has a hand-sized bump on the back of his head.

Jordan, a Lowerfields Primary School pupil, said: "I was talking to my friends when I saw the lamp post bending.

"I started running away but it hit me on my head. I tried to get back up to run, then it hit me again.

"There was blood everywhere and I was very dizzy."

Jordan plays rugby for Dudley Hill Club and hopes to be a professional player one day.

Ms Nolan said several neighbours believe that some of the other lamp posts are loose and claims that one on the same road fell down a few days ago.

Now the mum-of-three is taking legal advice.

A Council highways spokesman said: "We were very concerned to hear about this accident.

"Street lighting technicians visited Longfield Drive immediately to remove the damaged lamp post and check those nearby.

"An initial inspection suggests that the lamp post has been vandalised.

"This caused a welded joint between the base and shaft of the pole to give way.

"The lamp post was erected in 1995 and should have lasted 30 years. We will be asking the column manufacturer to fully investigate."
