Next year will be all-change in Kirklees with new ward boundaries being introduced for the 2004 elections.

New election boundaries will see an all-out election in June, with all the Council's seats being contested.

The new boundaries will see 23 electoral wards - one fewer than now - each with three councillors. This follows a review and recommendations by the Boundary Committee for England. Local government elections are usually held on the first Thursday in May but next year will be held on June 10 to coincide with the European parliamentary elections.

Changes are:

Birstall & Birkenshaw - same as currently but loses Brown Hill area to Batley West, Upper Batley area to Batley East and gains Monk Ings from Spen.

Heckmondwike gains the area to the east of Hollinbank Lane from Batley West, the area between the old railway line and the River Spen around Union Road from Spen, with the Roberttown area going to the new Liversedge & Gomersal ward.

Liversedge & Gomersal - similar to the current Spen ward with the addition of the areas from Heckmondwike mentioned above. It loses the area north-west of the disused railway line and the area to the east of Hightown Road to Cleckheaton, Monk Ings to Birstall & Birkenshaw and the area mentioned above to Heckmondwike.

Cleckheaton - similar to the current Cleckheaton ward but gains the area north-west of the old railway line and the area to the east of Hightown Road from Spen.
