The family of a Bradford woman who died in a crash just days before her 21st birthday today paid tribute to their "bubby, talented" girl.
Carmel Hallam, of Eccleshill, was on her way home in a taxi after a night out at the Midland Hotel - celebrating the finish of her summer job - when the vehicle was in collision with another car.
The accident happened in the early hours of Saturday morning at the junction of Haworth Avenue in Swain House Road. Carmel died the next day in Bradford Royal Infirmary.
The taxi driver, 45-year-old Gazanfar Mahmood who works for Barkerend Taxis, is still seriously ill in Leeds General Infirmary. His other two male passengers, aged 19 and 20, have been discharged from the BRI.
Carmel's mum Marie, dad Brian and her brother Stephen said they were devastated. They said Carmel and boyfriend John, who worked with her at Bradford Council Community Play and Activities Development Unit, were always careful about drink-driving, which was why they left their vehicle in the Midland Hotel car park.
"Carmel was such a bubbly, talented and athletic girl. Words cannot express the loss to family and friends," said the family.
Carmel, who had twice taken part in the junior British Ice Dance Skating Championships with her brother Stephen, was about to start her second year of study at Northumbria University, Newcastle, where she was studying photography.
Two men, aged 18 and 19, have been arrested in connection with the incident.
