budding young gardeners have been awarded a trophy for their flower power.

The gardening club members of Haworth Primary School blossomed in this year's Yorkshire in Bloom competition, picking up the Sir Richard Graham Youth Enterprise Award.

The club was among a bunch of four winners from Bradford to pick up trophies from the award ceremony, at Doncaster Dome, on Wednesday.

Certificates of merit were awarded to Keighley in the town centre award category and Yorkshire Bank Rosebowl for the most improved entry.

The town's war memorial display was awarded third place in the Audley Hartley Memorial Trophy for large towns and cities. Haworth's entry was placed seventh in the small country town section.

The judges identified the gardening club as an "amazing achievement" but said the overall entry needed "a lot more support from local and municipal bodies to go forward with this potentially good entry."

The judges also paid tribute to the poster competition and involvement of the town council in Keighley's entry.

An entry by Airedale Hospital in the public, private and charitable establishment was placed eighth.

Keighley town councillor Bob Horrell attended the event on behalf of Keighley's entry.

He said: "We were very delighted with the results. It was a splendid effort and the competition was stiffer than in the past. We were delighted with the merit certificates and third place and we look forward to next year."

Bradford Lord Mayor, Cllr Allan Hillary, who received Bradford's prizes, said: "I am thrilled to see the district pick up so many prizes at this major horticulture celebration.

"Each year volunteers, businesses, local groups and the council together put in an enormous amount of work to create wonderful floral displays across the district and these awards recognise their efforts."
