Mrs Rita Joy, of Wilson Avenue, Steeton, has supplied this group of women and children celebrating VE-Day -- Victory in Europe -- at Goose Eye, in May, 1945. She appears as young Rita Wilkinson, fifth from the left on the second row back.
She cannot recall what form the festivities took, but they probably included a tea and games. The photograph was taken outside Goose Eye's focal point, the Turkey Inn, whose victory decorations seem to consist of a letter V chalked above the doorway!
Names remembered by Mrs Joy highlight the family elements within the group: Mrs Pickles together with Sandra, Watson, Una, Betty, Donald, Harry and Derek Pickles; Mrs Day with Mary and Jill; Mrs Staines and Patricia and Greta; Mrs and Maureen Inman; Raymond, Kenneth, Rosemary, Doreen and Elaine Lund; and Roy and Billy Judson.
Also included are Kenneth Allan, Peter Fox, Margaret Hartley, Shirley Sayer and Mrs Bates, then landlady at the Turkey Inn.
