Michael Branch showed again last night why Nicky Law made him a top transfer target in the summer.

Branch smashed the only goal at Crystal Palace to give City a second win in four days. It was amazingly also the first time in the club's history they had beaten the Eagles at Selhurst Park.

Law was thrilled with the performance but heaped extra praise on Branch, who also netted in the comeback victory over Preston at the weekend.

Law trailed Branch for several months at Wolves and believes the former Everton striker is now justifying that dogged pursuit.

The City boss said: "He's had a bad two or three years at Wolves and some of that was probably down to Michael because it's a two-way thing.

"But he's come here and he's enjoying his football and keeps getting better and better.

"Michael's a fantastic player, his work-rate is phenomenal, he's a good finisher and is showing that now. I'm just delighted to have him here and I'm really pleased for Michael as well.

"I wasn't aware of the record here but it's a difficult place to come. We had to sustain periods of pressure but I thought we had the better clear-cut chances."

Marlon Beresford made a commanding start in goal after signing a short-term deal on Monday. He kept a clean sheet on the ground where he finished his Burnley career in May.

Law said: "I thought Marlon had an excellent debut. His handling and kicking was fantastic and he organised the back four well."

Law has come under fire for his comments about the fans after the Preston game. But he acknowledged the efforts of the small band of supporters who made the trip to London despite rail and motorway hold-ups.

"They are the hardcore fans and have travelled a long way for us. I'm glad we've given them something to go home happy about."
