Girls from three Bradford schools got hands-on experience of life in the construction industry in the latest drive to encourage females to take advantage of new opportunities in the sector.

The students from Belle Vue Girls, Bingley Grammar and Beckfoot School attended a two-day event hosted by Bradford College's Let's Train Women in Science and Technology (TWIST) project.

And Helen Collier, outreach and promotions co-ordinator for the project, said she hoped the experience would encourage girls to open their eyes to the opportunities that existed.

The programme was designed to develop the girls' communication, co-operation, teamwork, problem solving and design skills through the form of two practical workshops.

Among the tasks they took part in was the challenge to construct a giant pyramid out of wooden dowel and elastic bands.

"There has never been a better time for girls to consider training and employment in this industry," said Mrs Collier.

"We are hoping to raise awareness of the many opportunities arising for women within the construction industry and highlight that the industry is both dynamic and exciting."

She said there continued to be under representation of women in the sector and the college hoped the event, to coincide with National Construction Week, would help challenge perceptions.

"We have had very good feedback and I think they have enjoyed it," she said.

As part of the event, organised with the Construction Industry Training Board, British Gas engineer Naomi Hills, 25, talked to the girls about her experiences in a job traditionally dominated by men.

"It has been an uphill struggle to get girls involved in the past, but the next big challenge we face is to get employers to give these girls a chance," said Mrs Collier.
