Nicky Law believes you can teach an old dog new tricks.

The City boss reckoned Nicky Summerbee had his best game for the club at Crewe as he adapts to a more rounded role.

Summerbee, a traditional wideman, has been asked to operate more as a wing-back on City's travels, combining defensive duties with his trademark crosses.

Law said: "Nicky came here as an out and out old-fashioned winger who will stand out there and prevent their full back going forward.

"All of a sudden he's into the mode of doing a job for the team now, as well as putting in some great crosses. I thought the effort he put in on Tuesday was fantastic."

Law will want more of the same on Saturday at second-from-bottom Watford.

Michael Branch will be pushing for a recall after missing the last three games with a foot injury. But he may have to settle for a bench spot as Danny Forrest continues up front.

Law added: "Michael will do some work before the end of the week so hopefully he will be in contention.

"But I thought Danny did well against Crewe. He was on his heels at times but as the game went on he got more into it and his partnership with Andy Gray looked good.

"He had one chance which the

keeper saved and I thought Danny was growing in confidence the longer it went."
