Two educational champions have been honoured for their work to inspire Bradford youngsters.

Head teacher Dave Jones, of Holybrook Primary School, pictured here with pupils, and Maria Howarth, who manages the learning mentor scheme at Grange Technology College, were selected by Education Bradford for the Excellence in Cities awards.

Mr Jones has steered Holybrook Primary to success in the three years since it was set up under the Bradford schools' reorganisation.

Although the school serves one of the most disadvantaged areas of the city, the Ravenscliffe estate, results in SATs are much better than those achieved by the same children at their former middle school, Eccleshill North.

The positive Ofsted report describes Holybrook as "outstanding" in its ability to enhance facilities by attracting grants.

Inspectors were impressed to see how staff raised the self-esteem of children who joined the school with below average attainment.

"Sometimes, people think it's enough in an area like this to care for children, provide a secure environment," said Mr Jones.

"I don't think that's enough - our children need the educational opportunity and we need to be imaginative and keep driving up standards. Children become 'can do' kids if they think they can be successful."

The school heavily promotes sport, and several pupils have become district athletics champions.

Linda Disney, of Education Bradford, said: "We picked Dave because of his whole enthusiasm for the role of the learning mentor.

"He is so supportive and nothing's too much trouble for him to do: he gives up his time gladly to help train line managers, share his experience and disseminate good practice. He's really passionate and caring about what he does.

"Maria was chosen because she is line manager of the seven learning mentors at Grange Technology College. Although she has a very busy timetable, she is always there for them and has such enthusiasm and zest for the Excellence in Cities programme."

John Player, head teacher at Grange, said: "The work our mentors do in supporting students academically is very important and Maria manages this very effective provision."
