A woman may take out a private prosecution against West Yorkshire police after her car was wrecked by one of its vans.
Public relations officer Amanda Ormian's Citroen AX was parked outside her home in Cleckheaton Road, Oakenshaw, when the unmarked Toyota Hiace smashed into the back of it. It was shunted 40 feet along the road and demolished a neighbour's garden wall.
The seven year-old Citroen, valued at £1,500, was written off and Ms Ormian, 41, is now waiting to hear from West Yorkshire Police's insurers. But she claims she has had difficulty getting information from the police for her insurance claim despite the force carrying out its own investigation into the smash.
She said: "I have been bashing my head against a brick wall with the police. They would not give me the name of the van driver on the night the accident happened and promised someone would ring me the next day. But I never heard anything and I had to ring them at least ten times before I got through to somebody who could help. Nobody has rung me, they don't seem to care.
"My solicitor says it is illegal not to give drivers' details at the scene of an accident and I should go for a private prosecution to see justice done. I will consider it if I am not happy with what the police insurers say. I have always supported the police but I am so annoyed with them over this."
Ms Ormian said the police had told her the van driver had swerved to avoid a dog, but she claimed he must have been speeding. She and other residents are now planning a campaign for speed cameras to monitor the 30mph stretch of road.
Solicitors' clerk John Hazell, 56, whose garden wall was demolished, said he feared there could also be structural damage to his house after discovering a crack in the bay window frame.
He said: "I have been told it will cost £1,200 to rebuild the wall. The police insurers have told me to send them the estimates."
A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Two on-duty police officers were in the vehicle. The passenger suffered minor injuries but did not need hospital treatment.
"An investigation is ongoing at the moment into the cause of the accident and at this stage we cannot speculate on the exact reasons behind it. We are sorry the owner of the Citroen feels we have not responded to her requests for further information fully and we will be contacting the lady in due course."
