Skipton Athletics Club's ever growing list of title wins was further enhanced at the weekend thanks to a virtuoso performance from Jonathan Pawson, who won the British Isles Under 14 Fell Racing Championships.

Pawson, who lives at Flasby, pulled off his momentous triumph at Dreghorn near Edinburgh, where he proved himself to be not only another 'hammer of the Scots', but also of the best runners in all five home nations.

This was the second time in successive years that this accolade has come to the Skipton club following last year's win by Matthew Hurst in North Wales and it was the 10th national and international title claimed by a young club member in the last eight years - a feat matched by no other club in the land.

Unlike the English Championships, which are contested over six rounds, the British Isles Championships at this age group is a one-race confrontation.

Contested over a 2.5 kilometres course embracing 180m of ascent and descent over Allermuir Hill, the event saw Pawson never far from the searching pace. He was second at the summit and took over in a storming descent which saw him home in 11 minutes 56 seconds, 20m ahead of his nearest rival, fellow Yorkshireman Max Jones, with Ireland's Robert Borderley in close pursuit.

Pawson's win over Jones was particularly sweet, for the Holmfirth youngster had beaten the Skipton runner and others to win the Yorkshire title earlier in the summer at Settle.

However, the Skipton athlete has stepped up a gear since then and has now beaten Jones on the last three meetings.

Pawson intends to pursue a career in the Royal Marines and this superb effort will have done his 'CV' no harm at all.
