The jubilant looks on the faces of the Bradfordians who packed Centenary Square yesterday said it all. Whether or not they had been able to be at Old Trafford the previous evening they were eager to show their appreciation and gratitude to the Bulls for swelling their hearts with pride.
It was a tremendous achievement by the men from Odsal. On Saturday, discussing their prospects of making it a triple triumph, we coined what should perhaps be a new Bradford catchphrase when confronted with a major challenge: "Well why not?"
The Bulls provided the answer to that. Their positive attitude, sportsmanship, determination and courage were an inspiration. Although there were a few nerve-wracking moments, they and we knew they would do it in the end.
Council leader Margaret Eaton summed it up for everyone when she said: "The Bulls have once again shown what wonderful ambassadors they are for Bradford. It's great that they've made it to the heights of stardom again and the world sees Bradford as a successful place."
It is impossible to over-state the importance of this victory to local morale. Bradford has not been through the best of times in recent years. People yearn to be able to believe in themselves and their city.
Now the mood is changing. Soon work will begin on long-awaited major regeneration projects. The inspirational blueprint for the city centre has been published to a generally positive reception.
If we can build on the spirit generated by the Bulls' victory, we should be able to wave goodbye at last to Bradford's days in the doldrums. Well why not?
