THE purple "bin wagon" which can hardly be missed on Craven's roads has diverted more than 1,000 tons of waste from gardens away from landfill and turned it to compost.
The company which recycles the waste is keen to reassure local people that even though the distinctive purple collection vehicle can be seen taking the garden waste into the Skibeden landfill site near Skipton, it is not just being dumped in the ground. Waste management firm Yorwaste has a composting facility there.
Craven District Council issued 10,000 special brown coloured wheelie bins to households in February this year and residents have backed the scheme. Earlier this month the amount of waste to recycle topped the 1,000 ton mark.
The collection service ends in November but Craven District Council is expected to start it again next year.
