The first week in March of 1918 was a combined Business Men's Week and Submarine Week, raising funds for Keighley's contribution towards the war effort.
The occasion was marked by Borough Band concerts and a parade of the 6th West Riding Volunteers and local members of the National Motor Volunteers.
This scouting biplane went on display in the Town Hall Square decorated with bunting. Despite the two dashing young aircraftmen on the right of the group, it had been transported to Keighley by road. In the centre of these fund-raising campaigners stands the Mayor, F W L Butterfield, of Cliffe Castle, who officially declared the plane open for inspection. Thousands visited it during the week, including school-children who were given inspection tickets if they bought a War Savings Certificate.
"We want £100,000 to-day to complete the purchase of one submarine for EACH day of the week!" announced the fund-raisers on the last Saturday.
In the event, Keighley raised £556,089, largely through War Bonds and Savings Certificates. Utley Council School topped the list of child savers by contributing £653.
