The battle to save the city's Leeds Road laundry and slipper baths has been lost. In spite of strong Labour opposition and a petition containing about 350 signatures, Bradford Metropolitan Council decided by a majority of two to one to close the laundry and slipper baths and to reopen the slipper baths about a mile away in Lapage Street.

Silently, solemnly, with an air of determination, 3,000 men and women exiled from their homes behind the "Iron Curtain" and now living in Yorkshire, marched through the centre of Bradford on their way to a mass meeting to protest against religious persecution in the countries of Eastern Europe. The meeting, which was held at the Southgate Hall, was organised by the Bradford branch of the Polish Ex-Combatants Association.
