Gainsborough 3, Farsley Celtic 0: Farsley Celtic's FA Cup dream was ended in emphatic style last night when Gainsborough Trinity crushed their hopes of reaching the first round for only the second time ever.

Having taken a lead midway through the first half, Trinity rocked the Celts with a

second right on the stroke of half-time.

The statistics made even worse reading for the Farsley faithful after the home side netted in the final minute.

"I feel sorry for the lads, they didn't deserve that but it has come about because they didn't perform on the evening," said Celts boss Lee Sinnott.

"I'm very disappointed by the result but I have no complaints about being beaten by a better side on the day. They dominated too many areas for us to have had any hope of going through.

"They restricted us to some long-range efforts, we didn't work their keeper. We just never got going at all.

"I don't think it was because Gainsborough were much better than they were on Saturday, just that we were much worse. In the second half of the original meeting we made them

look ordinary, but this time they did it to us from start to finish."

The defeat cost Farsley a £10,000 winning fee but more importantly a potentially money-spinning tie at Nationwide Second Division outfit Brentford in the first-round

proper.

Trinity got their noses in front in the 24th minute following a mistake by Ben Austin. He missed a challenge and the ball was played through to the unmarked Karl Smith.

The home side's former Bradford City striker Gareth Grant netted seconds before the interval and Lee Ellington added the third just before the final whistle.

Tom Morgan had made a good save but could only parry a vicious shot and the loose ball dropped at the feet of Ellington who scored Trinity's goal in Saturday's 1-1 draw at Throstle Nest.

"We have got to get back into our stride now. We have six games in hand on some clubs in UniBond Division One and we have to get back to basics and start winning them," added Sinnott.
