Fire has caused £30,000 damage to a woollen waste mill, and it could have been worse but for the alertness of a teenage girl. Fourteen-year-old Catherine Brook, of New Line, Greengates, Bradford, was doing her homework when she heard a loud crackle from the mill at the back of her home. Catherine and her mother dashed round to the mill to find a woollen waste store ablaze.They ran back home and the fire brigade was called.

In three-and a-half years, 26 Bradford Ex-Servicemen have completed a self-help scheme of building their own semi-detatched bungalows in their spare time. The houses have been built near Netherlands Avenue, Low Moor. The last house is now completed. The occupants will move in on Saturday. And that will be the end of five years of hard work for the members who, for a deposit of £50 and 20 hours of spare time work every week, have built houses for themselves at a cost of about £980.
