In many Bradford schools there are too many children for safety in workroom and laboratory classes, says the Metropolitan division of the National Union of Teachers. "In cookery classes, school workshops... classes of over 30 mean a reduction of the standard of supervision
," said general secretary Mr. Ken Graveling.

"The word 'cripple' is a horrible, out-dated, brutal word, and we never use it," said Mr Frederick Morena, founder-secretary of the Infantile Paralysis Fellowship, speaking at the inaugural meeting of the Huddersfield and District group. The word 'cripple' suggested inferiority, went on Mr Morena. The last thing he and his fellow polio sufferers wanted was to be segregated and treated as people apart, because they were not.
