A group of Silsden primary school pupils had a PE lesson taken by an England cricket international.

Clare Taylor visited Hothfield Junior School as part of a pilot scheme from the Excellence in Cities initiative, which is funded by Learning Matters.

Clare, who is also a former England football international, teamed up with Bradford Council to visit ten schools in the district with the aim of raising the profile of sports in primary schools.

Clare said: "It's a way of trying to help each other motivate these youngsters to be more active.

"I'm trying to say to them that it all started for me in a playground just like theirs."

She added: "We hope to extend the scheme to more schools if the pilot is successful.

"Keighley schools have taken to it really well, we've already had a lot of interest."

Hothfield Junior School was the first school on Clare's list of ten.

She started the day by hosting an assembly about sports and her own career. She then took a year five PE class through some basic foot and handwork routines to increase their co-ordination skills.

The school will subsequently be able to incorporate the activities into their future PE lessons.

In the afternoon, Clare collaborated with the primary care nursing team, to take a healthy living workshop, highlighting the dangers of drugs and smoking and the importance of healthy eating.

Linda West, the school's learning mentor, said: "This has been a valuable exercise in raising awareness in the children and we hope Clare's visit will encourage the them, particularly girls, to take part in more sport.

"Clare is full of enthusiasm and aspirations. She's very inspiring."
