Victoria Rangers gave Premier rivals Ovenden a real runaround in the first round of the Pennine President's Cup to win 34-18 at Newlands Sports Ground.
The Vics, inspired by stand off Mick Sigston, produced a masterly first-half performance in which they scored stunning tries from John Beanland, Karl Wroe, Mickey Glenn and Gareth Barnes.
Scrum half Jason Jubb converted all four and added a drop goal to see them into the interval with a 25-0 lead.
Ovenden recovered some composure to reduce the arrears but Rangers' young speedster Damien Smith broke clear to race in from 50 metres for another splendid effort. Jubb was spot on with the boot with another two place kicks and a further one-pointer to ensure a berth to the next round.
Queensbury had a relatively easy passage 38-4 at home to West Bowling A. Bury handed under-18 captain Tom Middleton the loose forward jersey and he responded by scoring two quick touchdowns.
Wingman Lee Clapham also crossed and two penalties from stand off Paul Drake gave Bury the first stanza 16-4. In a one-sided second half, Andrew Senior, Darren Wilkinson, Trevor Stead and Gary Hobson added further tries and Drake kicked three conversions.
Birkenshaw centre Richard 'Big Bird' Cousen scored four tries in their 58-18 win at Silsden Park Rangers. The hosts could not match Birky's power and pace with a further seven touchdowns coming from Paul Bancroft (2), Nick Simpson (2), Simon Armitage and man-of-the-match Darren Webb (2). Steve Gallagher kicked seven goals.
Wyke put York Groves to the sword 48-18 in the first round of the Shipley Trophy at Towngate. They had the tie in the bag when they led 22-6 at half-time and pushed on to win handsomely thanks to tries from Mark Firth (2), Howard Carr, Simon Hodgson, James Barraclough (2), Steve Fowler, James Wild and John Loxam.
Queensbury A could only field 13 players at Ovenden A in Division Two. Hooker Danny Holmes gave them a flying start but he suffered a leg injury touching down and took no further part in the match. Bury refused to be daunted and tries from full back Andy Barraclough and forward Andrew Cannon, both converted by Brett Marriott, put them 16-14 up at the break.
Ovenden took full advantage of the extra man before Bury stand off Andy Thornton scored a late consolation in the 34-22 defeat.
Thornton won the Division Five top-of the-table clash 44-6 at home to Undercliffe. Home tries came from Justin Gornall, Kelvin Daulet (2), Sam Parkinson (2) and Mark Gay. Thornton A posted a comprehensive 34-6 success at St Josephs A. Matt Fullen crossed for a hat-trick and Charlie Timewell, Chris Helme and Keith Trudgill (2) joined him on the scoreboard.
In the Arriva National Conference, West Bowling never recovered from a nightmare start in a lacklustre performance that led to a surprise 24-16 defeat at Castleford Lock Lane.
Bowling found themselves 12 points down in the early exchanges due to woeful tackling on the flanks.
Wingman Lee Innes staged a one-man recovery effort when he supported a magnificent break from full back Peter Simpson to cross at the posts. He duly converted, which, together with his two earlier penalty goals, allowed West's to turn around 14-10 down.
Lock Lane wingman Andy Tillett crossed but Bowling stand off Danny Ramsden skipped over in style and Innes once again added the extras to make the score 18-16. Lock Lane stuck to their guns and Tillett showed a clean pair of heels to put the match beyond doubt.
