Keighley 41 Selby 6 - Tries in the first minute and the last minute, with five more in between properly reflects Keighley's overall domination of this Yorkshire League One encounter and, after a dismal start to the league campaign, hoists the Utley men into fifth place in the table.

With stand off Johnny Harrison and flanker Lee Gordon both missing with knee trouble, and long term casualties Paul Salmon and Andy Bennett still not recovered, the pre-match portends were not encouraging, but coach Tim Brunskill could not have expected more from his side on the day.

The now half back combination of Ian Woodwiss and Adam Balderstone combined well in attack and defence, whilst the second row pairing of Duncan Walsh and replacement Peter Southgate was particularly effective.

Keighley had points on the board before the crowd had settled. Straight from the start a sweeping attack in which Willie Hafu appeared twice alongside half a dozen other handlers created a fine try for Leigh Sugden, converted by Jonathan Hargreaves to give the home side the best possible opening.

Selby were handicapped by the loss of No.8 Robert Taylor with a dislocated shoulder and indeed, before the first half hour was up, had been forced to introduce all three replacements as the early exchanges were robustly contested. In the meantime, stand off Pemberton converted a brace of penalty goals and for a time the game was evenly balanced.

A good take by Duncan Walsh at an attacking line out, however, brought a try for Willie Hafu and from then on Keighley seldom looked back. The New Zealander has rapidly become a great favourite at Utley and he charged through three attempted tackles before touching down in the corner.

Full back Hargreaves' probing runs were a regular threat to Selby as Keighley confined play to the visitor's half. They increased their lead when their forwards disrupted a scrum on the 22 metre line, quick passing by the backs bringing a try for wingman Matthew Cox and an interval lead of 17 points to 6.

The irrepressible Hafu soon made his mark in the second half, his strong run setting up a chance for wingman Chris Watts who was only denied a try when he put a foot in touch. Keighley were, however, not to be denied. Good work by prop Paul Sinfield kept them on the attack and No.8 Peter Schofield supported well for the next try, converted by Hargreaves.

A storming run by Peter Southgate then ripped open the Selby defence and Keighley's grip on the game tightened even more. Watts again went close before another Southgate charge brought Hafu his second try.

Keighley's backs were by then playing exhilarating rugby. Centres Kevin Young, Nigel Curr and replacement Dale Towler punched holes in a tiring Selby defence and Cox rounded off a slick attack with a try in the corner. The visitors were out for the count and after Sinfield was held just short of the line, Leigh Sugden completed the try count with his second score, improved this time by Matthew Cox.
