A Yorkshire competitor may have failed to reach the finals of the Hastings Direct British Tour tennis event at Ilkley, but Jason Torpey of Hull and Alice Mackenzie of Huddersfield both continued their recent good form to reach the semi-finals.

And Mackenzie's clubmate Danielle Brown - who isn't full-time yet, unlike the pair above - was a quarter-finalist to show that she will also be one to look for in the near future.

The last three rounds of both the men's and women's singles were played on Saturday as there had been no play the previous day due to the River Wharfe bursting its banks and cutting off access to the club.

Frinton semi-finalist Mackenzie, just 15 and already starting to travel the world in search of WTA computer points, notched one of her finest wins yet in beating second seed and holder Luisa Cowper (Warwickshire) in the quarter-finals.

Cowper, who used to play for Rawdon in the National Club League, has a world ranking of 980, but she made too many errors on the backhand as the more solid Mackenzie served up a 6-3, 7-5 victory.

In order to get the tournament finished, referee Peter Finn had decided that all third sets would be tie-breaks only on the final day, and Mackenzie - who is seeking a sponsor - fell to Durham and Cleveland's Sarah Borwell 4-6, 6-2 (7-3) in the semi-finals.

A-level student Brown, 17, faced top seed Carly Homewood (Sussex) in her quarter-final. The Huddersfield girl's booming serve was working so well in the first set that the exasperated 20-year-old from Brighton screamed out: "It's like facing a female Goran!"

Borwell - runner-up at Ilkley last year - faced Frinton winner, 16-year-old Rebecca Llewellyn of Hertfordshire, in the final and was beaten 6-4, 6-2.

The weather was good enough for the two finals to be played on the acrylic outdoor courts, as was the case in 1998, but Borwell was glad to have reached the final at all as she has barely recovered from glandular fever.

"I was disappointed that I lost the final, but basically glad to have had the match practice," said the 22-year-old from Middlesbrough.

Torpey, 21, who has improved markedly since going full-time, knocked out second seed Barry Fulcher (Norfolk) in the quarter-finals.

But the Felixstowe runner-up was then beaten by 20-year-old Ian Flanagan (North Wales), who gained revenge for his defeat in the Nottingham final four weeks ago.

Nottingham-based Flanagan had to make a remarkable recovery, however, in the final. He had a match point at 5-1 in the second set against Michael Ouvarov (Middlesex), but then had to survive a set point at 5-6 before winning 6-2, 7-6 (7-4).

It was Flanagan's fourth British Tour final, but his first title at Tier One level.
