Bradford's post offices are doing a roaring trade in dog licences. Nearly 2,000 more licences than usual were sold in a month. It follows a series of cases at Bradford magistrates' court last month when several people were fined for not having licences.

The Rev. M.V. Sweeney, headmaster of St. Bede's Grammar School, Bradford, discussing some trends of the welfare state at a meeting of the Bradford Round Table last night, said one of the serious effects was that people have lost the incentive to save money. Since the state provided pensions for the aged, a health service and education, the principle reasons for thrift had been removed.
