Crowds flocked to Silsden Carnival at the weekend as the British summer made a long overdue appearance.

Glorious sunshine and a host of attractions brought people flocking on to the streets to enjoy the festival atmosphere.

And organisers say the bumper crowds helped to raise at least £1,000 for local charities.

The day began in fine style with the crowning of carnival queen Veronica La Via at the Punchbowl Inn.

This year's procession had more than 40 entries with Silsden's award-winning majorettes and the City of Leeds Pipe Band joining in.

Crowds lined the streets as the procession made its way down to Jacksons Riverside Field for the main event, opened by Silsden town mayor Councillor Lawrence Walton.

Entertainment was provided by the Arizona Cowboys, a Punch and Judy show, a funfair and the Marsh Falconry Display team.

There was music throughout the afternoon courtesy of the army cadet and air cadet bands, as well as a performance by Silsden Town Band.

Ray's disco - sponsored by Silsden Sewer Rats bike club - kept the sounds coming throughout the day.

Treasurer Peter Fell said: "The attendance was up on previous years and the comments I've had are that it was a very enjoyable and well-organised day that went without any hitches whatsoever.

"It was also noticeable that people were staying for longer which was very good to see.

"The procession was very well attended and there seemed to be a good public turn out, with the penny cart raising £150.

"We expect to make at least £500 in donations and we should have made at least £1,000 for local charities.

"The other feature was that we ran our own beer tent and even though we brought a third more stock in than originally planned we still sold every bottle and tin and made about £400 profit."

Mr Fell expressed the carnival committee's thanks to the pubs in Silsden for holding collections and to Miad Self Service for sponsoring the event.
