It was a golden day for Cowling as villagers celebrated the Queen's 50 years on the throne in style.

Glorious sunshine and a host of attractions brought the crowds flooding to Cowling Jubilee Gala on Saturday.

And it was a very special golden jubilee for Kathleen Wilkinson who was the village gala queen in 1952.

She had the honour of officially opening the event and joining in the procession alongside her attendants from that year.

The procession, including this year's gala queen Faye Robinson, started from Cowling Primary School and followed a route through the village to the recreation ground.

The crowds were kept entertained with a huge assortment of competition classes, all based on a royal theme.

Music was provided by Barnoldswick Brass Band and there was also a funfair for children, a display of classic motorcycles and a tea tent.

Chairman of the gala committee Anne Mellor said: "It was a brilliant day and the fantastic weather helped immensely.

"There was a very good turnout and although we were short of helpers before we had quite a few volunteers coming down on the Friday night and on the Saturday."

A street collection on the day will be donated to local groups with the rest of the cash raised from the day - which organisers say should be in the £2,000 area - donated to a chosen charity.

Anyone who would like to help the gala committee can contact Anne Mellor on 01535 633049.
