British Rail is expecting approval next month for the building of two revolutionary experimental trains which could ultimately save services on many loss-making, lightly used branch lines. The new lightweight "railbuses" are the result of a link-up with British Leyland. Bodies like those on Leyland National buses produced at its Workington, Cumbria plant will be built to a four wheel chassis by British Rail workshop engineers.

A warning to users of the new all-night burning fire-grates is given by Shipley's Sanitary Inspector, Mr W Farndale. They should make sure the ashes they throw into the dustbin are cool. There is a danger of hot ashes getting into the refuse wagon, being thrown on a tip, and continuing to smoulder. One tip fire broke out over three months after the offending embers had been inadequately covered over.
