Manningham is "on the up" - though just how far and how fast the improvements go will depend to a large extent on how enthusiastic the residents are in following the appeal inscribed on the district's new litter bins. "Respect your street" is an excellent slogan which hopefully will prompt people to think twice before they mess up the area in which they live.
The Manningham Means Business group deserve to be congratulated on their initiative in arranging for a further 70 of the blue bins to be strategically placed on Manningham Lane. They represent another step towards the "branding" of the area as a place where good things are starting to happen.
The businesses involved in this group have worked very hard to try to turn Manningham into somewhere their staff want to work. It will take a long time to completely overturn the disastrous impact on the district's reputation of the events of the summer of 2001 but good progress has been made.
The plans for new railings, hanging baskets and lampposts and cleaner buildings in Oak Lane and other streets, all timed to tie in with the redevelopment of Manningham Mills, should speed up this process considerably.
The litter bins are a high-profile symbol of Manningham's determination to clean up its act in line with the spirit of the Telegraph & Argus's "Bin It for Bradford" campaign. It is vital now that residents follow the lead set by the world of business.
If they really do respect their streets then Manningham, which was so recently a source of shame for Bradford, could instead become a flagship for local pride.
