Keighley MP Bob Cryer today emphasised the way in which jobs in small firms could be protected by the rescue of bigger organisations. Speaking during the Second Reading debate of the Employment Opportunities Bill, a Tory Back Bench measure, he criticised the Conservatives for opposing such "rescues" as British Leyland and Chrysler. The rescue of those two companies had saved some 10,000 small firms who were providing goods to the motor manufacturers, he said.

Young policemen "who lack experience in handling people" might be responsible for more people appearing in Bradford's courts on drink charges, said Mr H. J. Stocks, sales director of a soft drinks firm, in Bradford last night. He was presiding at the annual dinner of Bradford and District Licence Holders' Association. "When anyone reads about that in Bradford they are going to start blaming the licensee for this excessive drinking and the number of people being brought up."
