In one of West Yorkshire's worst nights of the winter for road accidents, four people died and at least 50 were injured yesterday. Black ice on untreated roads, resulting from strike and overtime bans by council road gritters, sent scores of vehicles skidding and crashing, and the West Yorkshire ambulance service was at full stretch.
