Spen Victoria put their disappointing Bradford League form behind them and Manningham Mills sprang another major upset in the third round of the Heavy Woollen Cup.
Spen, who currently prop up the Division One table, defeated Central Yorkshire League side Liversedge by 53 runs while Second Division Manningham Mills continued their giant-killing run by scoring a five-run win over Hanging Heaton. Kez Ahmed spent all of last season batting at No 11 but when he was promoted to open on Sunday, he seized his chance to impress.
Ahmed top scored with 61 and was aided by Ian Wood (49) as Spen scored 221 for eight. He followed up by taking four for 30 and securing a run-out with a direct hit as Liversedge were dismissed for 168. Imran Dawood, brother of Cleckheaton's Ismail Dawood, struck a powerful 68.
Manningham Mills once again relied on their powerful batting as they followed up their second-round win over Undercliffe with another stunning success. Amjid Hussain led the way with 49 in a total of 240 before Yasir Ali took three for 26 to restrict Hanging Heaton to 235 for eight despite the efforts of Alex Morris (66) and Steve Bethel (52).
Their reward is an away tie against Woodlands, who made it through to the last eight after a thrilling encounter with Idle. Woodlands eventually won by eight runs despite another wonderful innings of 123 by Idle's overseas star JP Yadav. Woodlands owed their total of 290 for four to half-centuries from Nick Whitehill (67no), Tim Orrell (66), Russell Murray (54) and Richard Pyrah (53). Idle replied with a spirited 282 for six.
Baildon followed up their valuable league win over Mirfield on Saturday with a comfortable victory. They bowled out Barnsley for 127 and eased to a seven-wicket success with David Clow making an unbeaten 54.
Brighouse are the second Bradford League Division Two side in the quarter-finals after scoring 252 for six on their way to a 37-run win over Kexborough.
Quarter-final draw: Spen Victoria v Brighouse, Townville v Lascelles Hall, Woodlands v Manningham Mills, Wrenthorpe v Baildon. Ties to be played on June 27.
