The first elected members of the newly-formed Wrose Parish Council today pledged to unite the community and work to bring improvements to the village.

Nine councillors were elected after residents voted using postal votes alongside the district and European elections.

Of the ten candidates who stood, Marise Holmes, Derek Daykin, David Jessop, Dennis Jackson, Martin Humphreys, Trevor Williams-Berry, Elsie Sophia Hobsbaum, Robert Porter and Sheree Longbotham were elected to the council. Balbir Singh missed out on the nine seats available.

Mr Jessop said: "We want to unite Wrose which has been affected by electoral boundary changes, and to listen to people and try to improve life here."

Councillors for three other newly-formed parish councils have been selected without the need for a vote because not enough candidates stood.

Clayton Parish Council has been split into two wards, West and East. In Clayton (West) five councillors, Elaine Byrom, Jennifer Finder, Joan Parker, Betty Priestley and Robert Spencer stood for eight seats. No candidates stood in Clayton (East) which had five seats up for grabs. In Sandy Lane only Paul Noble stood as a candidate for the six seats.

Wilsden Parish Council has also been split into two wards.

Robert Armstrong took the only seat available in Wilsden (Harecroft) and five candidates, Peter Allison, Tony Caunt, Terry McNamara, Jeffrey Moor and James Newton, stood for the eight seats in Wilsden. The remaining places on the councils will be filled by co-opting.
