Otley Athletic Club
FIVE members of Otley AC took part in the inaugural Ripon Midsummer ten mile race last Sunday. In previous years, a 10k race had been staged mainly in the grounds of Studley Royal and this new event covered much of the same terrain but was extended to include some quite severe hills on the nearby country lanes.
The weather was very warm but there was a disappointing turnout with only 120 runners pre-entered and no entries being taken on the day.
Nevertheless, Otley's Howard Jeffrey continued his recent good form by finishing in sixth place with a time of 65.27. Tom Hannah was pleased to complete a second successive ten mile race in just over 70 minutes (having performed the previous weekend at Thirsk) and managed 17th position in 70.37. Phil Robinson was feeling the effects of some long-distance mountain running in Wales but still managed to finish in 34th place in 76.20. New member Sam Gardner completed the course in approximately 86 minutes whilst Hannah Peacock finished in 94 minutes despite suffering from cramp.
After the race, Howard Jeffrey received first prize in the V45-50 age category and was delighted to discover that Otley's first three finishers had won the overall team prize.
Also on Sunday a further five Otley members took part in the Ilkley 8k Trail Race which included the paths in Middleton Woods and some stiff climbs up to the moors behind. No times were available at the time of writing but Malcolm Court, Trevor Lambert, Daniel Lambert, Graham Stead and Antonio Cardinale all enjoyed the event.
There is still time to enter this year's Otley Ten Mile Road Race sponsored by Otley Motors, which will be held on Wednesday, June 30. Entry forms are available from the club and at local sports shops and leisure centres.
Otley AC welcome runners of all abilities to their training sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 7.15pm at Otley RUFC. Tel 0113 2842572 for further details or visit the club website at www.otleyac.co.uk
