A Keighley-born cartoonist and designer whose creations include the famous "Mr Sheen" character has died.

Tom Hewitt -- who died in Airedale Hospital on Sunday, aged 71 -- was also behind well-known company logos, including that of the Yorkshire Bank.

Latterly he was working on a book of cartoons about extensive travels he had made in Greece with his wife, Peggy, an author.

This week Peggy said she was still in deep shock over his death, which was due to a suspected brain haemorrhage. The couple were married in 1957.

"We had a very close marriage and had some fantastic experiences together -- he was a wonderful husband," she said.

"He was an extremely gifted man and also very popular -- the huge number of cards and phone calls I have received since Sunday is testament to that. People have been very generous and supportive."

Tom was born in the Fell Lane area and, apart from a brief early-childhood spell in Huddersfield, grew up there.

He attended the former Keighley Boys Grammar School before going on to Keighley Art School and then Leeds College of Art, where he gained a design diploma.

After working for various advertising and design firms, he and a friend set up their own studio in Leeds, where he worked for 30 years. He later became a freelance.

Other notable creations produced by Tom included the character "Squirt", which featured in several books and later on TV. And he did considerable work in Northern Ireland, part of which included creating "Phil the Pill" in a successful Government money-saving campaign to discourage people from taking prescriptions unnecessarily.

Tom and Peggy, who was born in the Worth Valley, lived at Oldfield House for 15 years, before moving to Embsay and then -- about two-and-a-half years ago -- to Rathmell.

Although officially retired, Tom continued to use his talents. He was a regular visitor to Rathmell School, where he loved working with the children.

His other interests included singing. He was a former choir member at St John's Church, Ingrow, where his father also sang, and was a serving member of the Langcliffe Singers.

He was also a lay reader in the Church of England for over 40 years.

Tom leaves his wife, daughter Melanie and son-in-law David, son Jeremy and daughter-in-law Julia, and four grandchildren.

The funeral service is being held at St Akeldas Church, Giggleswick, on Wednesday, at 11.45am, followed by cremation at Oakworth.
