It was a three-step waltz into a career change for Cheryl Burden.

First, her cousin joined a top dance company. Then her son trained with the prestigious Royal Ballet.

And then came the phenomenal success of Strictly Come Dancing, in which personalities like Natasha Kaplinski competed on prime-time TV.

It all added up to a decision that has changed Cheryl's life.

The 39-year-old has given up her job as a call centre manager to open a Bingley shop specialising in dance equipment.

Xquisite will stock costumes, shoes and equipment for tap, modern, ballroom, ballet and other genres.

Cheryl said she first became interested in the dancing world after watching her cousin, Lori Gilchrist, who performs with the Northern Ballet Theatre Company.

Then her son Jake also took up ballet and won training sessions with the Royal Ballet at the age of ten. Now 14, he is a pupil at the acclaimed Hammond School in Chester, which specialises in dance.

"The dance world is something I've been into before Jake was dancing but his success has been an influence," said Mrs Burden.

"I just thought to myself there was a demand for dancing now.

"Ballroom has gone through the roof with the success of Strictly Come Dancing."

Mrs Burden, who lives in Wilsden, has worked as a call centre manager for Abbey, Green Flag and other companies for more than ten years.

She said she was not worried Xquisite, in Park Road, might not be successful despite competition from similar shops in the district.

"I think Bingley is a prime spot because it is an up-and-coming town and there is a regeneration programme going on," she said.

"There are a few dance schools in the area and Bingley Grammar School runs GCSE dance classes as well."

Mrs Burden said she was being supported by her husband, Shaun, who is a manager at Crossley Evans metal processors in Shipley.

The shop will open on Saturday, March 5.
