An investigation has been demanded into the policing of Bradford City's home match against Huddersfield amid claims "heavy-handed" officers assaulted fans.

Stan Frontczak said he was struck with a baton and his two sons thrown through a door as police stormed into a pub before Saturday's derby game.

The Huddersfield Town fan said the policing was the worst he had seen in 30 years and he was now considering stopping going to matches.

Mr Frontczak, 40, had arranged to meet a friend from Bradford at the Ring O' Bells in Bolton Road, Bradford with his sons Colin, 22 and Chris 18.

"At 1pm there were about half a dozen people in the pub," he said. "Two constables came in and a chat with us, just making general conversation about the game. They were very friendly.

"They told us to get to the bar if we wanted another pint because they were bringing in a bus of Huddersfield fans."

And, at 1.45pm, police took in about 100 away supporters. Mr Frontczak said: "There was no rowdy behaviour; no singing or chanting and no abuse towards anybody. Then, at about 2.30pm, my friend phoned to say he couldn't get anywhere near the pub because of the police outside."

The Frontczaks decided to leave but, "suddenly and quite violently", the doors swung open and two police officers started screaming and shouting, 'Get out. Clear of the pub.'

"I was asking, 'What has happened? What is going on?'

"One of the officers struck me on the arm with his baton.

"My youngest son wouldn't say boo to a goose and he was absolutely petrified. He was holding his hands to his face because he was expecting to be hit. The pub was full of police swinging batons; someone was thrown to the floor and another was kicked by police.

"There was no reasoning with them. They were being so heavy-handed, it was as if they were enjoying what they were doing." Mr Frontczak of Crossland Moor, near Huddersfield, claimed he and his sons were thrown through the pub door and forced onto the fans' bus.

There were no problems during the game but they decided to leave early as the Bantams were beating their team 2-0.

Mr Frontczak said police stopped him getting to Bradford Interchange and forced him back onto the same bus. This meant his sons had to make their own way back to Huddersfield.

Mr Frontczak, a self-employed plumber, said he will make an official complaint against West Yorkshire Police.

His MP Kali Mountford, (Labour, Colne Valley) has written to the force's Chief Constable, Colin Cramphorn, calling for an investigation.

The landlord of the Ring O' Bells was unavailable for comment. But the Telegraph & Argus understands he is due to have a meeting with West Yorkshire Police about the incident on Thursday.

A West Yorkshire police spokesman refused to comment on Mr Frontczak's complaint but said any complaint would be "fully investigated".
