Bank Top Harriers upset all the odds to pull off a 16-4 success at favourites Underbank Rangers in the semi-final of the Andrew Bennett Memorial Trophy.

Bank Top are unbeaten in Division Five but were regarded by many as mere cannon fodder against Holmfirth-based Division Three side Rangers.

However, they produced a David versus Goliath performance and were well in command at the break following tries from centres Jason Gelders and Cameron Nelson. Scrum half Bob Brown added one of the conversions to give them a

10-0 interval lead.

The second stanza again belonged to the Bradford side with man-of-the-match Scott Haley calling the shots.

Wingman Paul Royston crossed for the all-important last try and Brown added the extras to send his side to the final to be held at Dewsburys Rams on May 2.

Clayton maintained top spot in the Premier Division, and at the same time gained sweet revenge for their Bradford Cup exit, with a 58-4 win over arch rivals Birkenshaw at Lidget Green.

The Villagers raced into a 34-0 half-time lead with loose forward Craig Pickthall scoring four tries for the second week running.

Further efforts came from Peter Milnes (2), Mark Schofield, Danny Caston and Richard Cousen. Prop John Parkinson crossed for a brace and added seven conversions.

Despite lacking seven first-team regulars, Queensbury took a giant step to top-flight safety with a 22-21 win at Westgate Redoubt.

Lee Baron and Trevor Stead crossed for Bury but the star of the show was Stuart Calvert with a try and five goals, the last of which was slotted over in the final minute.

In Division One, while West Bowling A lost 22-18 at home to Park Amateurs the good news for Wests is that former Dudley Hill forward Gareth Shepherd made an impressive return following a long lay-off following a leg injury.

Chris Curtain, James Dewhirst, Danny York and Dan Haigh scored the tries and Paul Ali kicked the solitary goal.

Undercliffe are in pole position to take the Division Four title after a sparkling 33-8 success against Thornton at Rawdon Meadows.

Cliffe could only post an Andy Feely touchdown in a close first stanza but they took advantage of Thornton indiscipline to run out comfortable winners with further tries from Jason Pounder, Jonathan Hotham, Steve Wilkinson, Damien Patchett and Matt Pitman.

Wyke's slim hopes of Division Three rugby next term came to an end with a 14-0 defeat at Slaithwaite Saracens.

The black and whites failed to get the scoreboard ticking for the first time this season but at least they gained some satisfaction following good displays from James Barraclough and Mick Merryfield.

West Bowling B won the local derby against Clayton A 18-10 at the Delph. Teenage second-row forward Ross Simpson had a cracker, scoring a superb 40-metre try and veteran Craig Hillam also crossed and kicked three goals.

Andrew Dugginshaw scored his first for the club and junior half back Craig Chapman was named man of the match.
