A couple who spent almost 30 years working together are celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary.

Walter and Ada Newiss, of Long Lee, worked together in a greengrocers shop they owned in Queens Street, Ingrow.

And this weekend they will be celebrating their anniversary with family and some of the friends they made at the store. The couple met during the war. Ada, 78, moved to Keighley from south Yorkshire to work in the textile trade.

Walter, 80, who has lived in Keighley for most of his life, was in the navy and based at Harwich and Lowestoft, but made regular visits back to his home town.

The pair married in Cudworth, South Yorkshire, on March 9, 1945, before moving to Keighley.

In 1957 they bought the greengrocers they would own for nearly 30 years, before retiring in 1986.

Mr Newiss claims that shared interests are the secret to a lasting marriage.

"We're very compatible," he said. "We've got shared hobbies. We both like music and enjoyed spending time in our garden. It's very easy when we both like the same things, it solves a lot of problems, there's no friction or anything like that. We're just two good friends."

And despite the amount of time the couple spent working together, Mr Newiss says it was a happy time.

"We enjoyed all our years in the shop. We knew all the customers and even knew who hadn't been in," he said.

"It was a personal approach to shopkeeping that you don't tend to see anymore."

The couple have two sons, David and Graham, and a daughter, Susan, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

They regularly attend St Barnabas' Church, at Thwaites Brow.
